The upholstery is later and shows the occasional mark and minor wear commensurate with use, while the ebonised legs retain a particularly pleasing degree of rubbing and surface patination. The castors have considerable age and appear entirely appropriate to the chair. Structurally it presents very well, with the well-drawn proportions and slightly relaxed upholstery giving it an appealingly comfortable appearance.

The upholstered fauteuil de salon became an important element of the increasingly comfortable French domestic interior during the Second Empire. By the 1860s and 1870s, upholstery was often allowed to dominate almost completely, with the wooden framework disappearing beneath deep padding and sweeping backs and arms. This chair is a particularly successful example: rather than relying upon carving or ornament, its character comes from its exaggerated silhouette, tightly rolled arm terminals and the contrast between the pale upholstery and ebonised legs.

A handsome and extremely comfortable armchair with an unusually strong, almost modern silhouette with its restrained colouring and sculptural shape it proves remarkably easy to place, being both a very good decorator’s chair and considerably more interesting than the ubiquitous button-backed salon examples of the period.
