It was invented by Louis-Jaques-Mandé Daguerre and introduced worldwide in 1839. By 1860, new processes which were less expensive and produced more easily viewed images had almost completely replaced it. Viewing a daguerreotype is unlike looking at any other type of photograph. The image does not sit on the surface of the metal, but appears to be floating in space, and the illusion of reality, especially with examples that are sharp and well exposed is unique to the process. Several types of antique photographs, most often ambrotypes and tintypes, but sometimes even old prints on paper, are very commonly misidentified as daguerreotypes, especially if they are in the small, ornamented cases in which daguerreotypes made in the US and UK were usually housed. George wanted to move into the Ranger's House by the castle, but his brother, Henry was already living in it and refused to move out. Instead, George had to move into the Upper Lodge, later called the Queen's Lodge, and started the long process of renovating the castle and the surrounding parks. George's architectural taste shifted over the years. As a young man, he favoured Classical, in particular Palladian styles, but the king came to favour a more Gothic style, both as a consequence of the Palladian style becoming overused and poorly implemented, and because the Gothic form had come to be seen as a more honest, national style of English design in the light of the French revolution Working with the architect James Wyatt, George attempted to "transform the exterior of the buildings in the Upper Ward into a Gothic palace, while retaining the character of the Hugh May state rooms". The outside of the building was restyled with Gothic features, including new battlements and turrets. Inside, conservation work was undertaken, and several new rooms constructed, including a new Gothic staircase to replace May's 17th-century version, complete with the Grand Vestibule ceiling above it. New paintings were purchased for the castle, and collections from other royal palaces moved there by the king. The cost of the work came to over £150,000 (over £120 million in todays terms). Not an axiomatic modernist, Wormley deeply appreciated traditional design, and consequently his work has an understated warmth and a timeless quality that sets it apart from other furnishings of the era. Marshall Field hired Wormley in 1930 to design a line of reproduction 18th-century English furniture; the following year he was hired by the Indiana-based Dunbar, where he quickly distinguished himself. He designed two lines for Dunbar each year — one traditional, one modern — until 1944, by which time the contemporary pieces had become the clear best sellers. The closure of the building had been talked about for many years but the relocation of services became urgent as structural repairs put an ever increasing financial strain on the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Trust.

The Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital was built in 1881 and dealt with up to 1,000 patients a week. And incidentally that was the correct title for it, as evidenced by the wording on the building, although for many people "the Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital" tripped off the tongue more easily. The building itself had for a long time been considered an unsuitable place in which to administer modern treatment. The hospital's roots went back to earlier in the 19th century, as it started life as an Eye and Ear Dispensary in 1818 in a building next to the old Raven Hotel in Castle Street.

A public fund was launched and £12,000 later in 1881 the Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital for Shropshire and Wales – as it was officially known –was born. The unusual facade of the building was the result of a competition staged for architects to come up with the best design for a "modern" hospital. Specifications for the design had to meet the latest medical thinking, plenty of fresh air, space and hygiene. The result was a hospital on the edge of The Quarry with high ceilings and its own sewage system.

Its neo-Gothic appearance, which even today raises eyebrows, was very distinctive in red Ruabon brick with terracotta dressings, towers, overhanging gables, verandahs and gargoyles (these being two of), many of which were lost over the years.

It initially catered for the poor and needy, dispensing medicine and help even if little early surgery was carried out. A feature of the hospital was to name wards after eminent surgeons of the day. After its closure the building was bought by Shropshire Homes and converted into prestigious apartments in an 18-month development which was officially completed in March 2002. The development, called Kingsland Bridge Mansions, won an award for architectural merit and it saw a distinctive feature restored to the former hospital. The spire or tower top was taken down in November 1959 by its then owners as it was too expensive to repair and served no purpose. But the developers, as part of their planning permission, were asked to restore and return the spire to its former resting place to complete the development. The spire was rebuilt in 2001 and once again took pride of place on the top of the landmark building.

An extremely difficult to find original pair of special magnificence which will become complete again when they are once again elevated amongst the clouds.
Origin: English
Period: Regency
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1820-25
Width: 19”
Height: 33” or 17.5” at seat
Depth: 17.5” (all at extremities)

The very attractive and decorative Regency faux bamboo armchair, having turned supports and scrolling arms, the splat and frieze with carvetto balls, to tapering legs to splayed ends, the whole with an unmeddled with finish to her lacquer and surviving from the first quarter of nineteenth century England.

The chair is in good original condition and we have only simply given her a light wax to protect the paintwork which is beautifully worn in the right areas. The following statement shows how like the ideals of the movement his thinking was: 'The man who can form a bowl or vase well is an artist, and so is the man who can make a chair or table... the converse of the facts is also true; for if a man be not an artist he cannot form an elegant bowl, nor make a beautiful chair'.

Ault Pottery was the ceramic firm to which Dresser supplied designs at the end of his career. Archaeologists encouraged the exploration of Egypt in the late eighteenth century, but it was not until the 1802 publication of Dominique Denon's Voyages Dans la Basse et Haute Egypte that a resurgence in popularity of Egyptology became notable.
