The left rear leg is stamped with the number 8969 as photographed. The settee has recently undergone sympathetic upholstery work, during which the frame was exposed and its traditional construction retained. The accompanying workshop photographs reveal the substantial timber carcass, webbed seat, hessian foundation and natural hair stuffing. Now presented in clean natural calico, ready either to use exactly as it is or to serve as an under-upholstery for a final decorative fabric. The timber frame displays numerous historic tack holes and other evidence of its successive upholstery campaigns, entirely appropriate to its age. She is structurally sound and exceptionally comfortable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDating from the Edwardian period, the settee belongs to the great tradition of English country-house upholstery in which comfort and proportion took precedence over overt ornament. Its exceptionally deep seat, low stance, loose cushioning and extravagantly rolled arms have much in common with the celebrated upholstered furniture produced by the better London makers around 1900. The form is reminiscent of Howard \u0026amp; Sons or makers such as Cornelius Smith, although in the absence of a conclusive maker’s mark it would be inappropriate to attribute it to that firm.
