An occasional table, of octangular form and inlaid with mother of pearl, ebony, and various coloured fruitwoods in an intricate geometric pattern typical of Moorish design, the top forming a central star, the sides each with crossbanded and strung panels beneath a star design, terminating in legs of architectural form. Several areas of loss to top; otherwise in good, attractive condition.
'Moorish' is a term first coined in the nineteenth century to describe Islamic North Africans, typically Arabs and Berbers, and while the term now has little ethnographic use, it is used to describe the Islamic influence on art and architecture found in North Africa, southern Spain, and Portugal.
