Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1930-40

The scarce child’s Mickey Mouse mat or rug, depicting the cartoon characters of Mickey and Minnie ice skating to a gold ground, being Italian in origin under license from Disney and surviving from the 1930s in good overall order.

The piece is in good overall order considering the material and age. Some of the fringing is lacking as photographed. There are no holes, repairs or tears.

The character’s public debut was in Steamboat Willie, which appeared in 1928 and was one of the first cartoons with synchronised sound. By the mid-30s, largely because of The Mickey Mouse Club, Mickey had developed into a role model for children. This piece was part of a wave of the earliest merchandise and is now highly prized. Noted Disneyana experts Hake’s Americana valued a similar rug for $800-1200 in 2005

A rare collector’s piece with a nice Christmassy feel which could easily be wall hung.
