With something of the feel of Richard Scarry’s influence about them, this delightfully illustrated vintage Fry’s chocolate selection box is empty but in superb condition considering it is fifty plus years old. There are no creases or cracks and the colours remain vibrant with the beefeater and maiden featuring prominently on the cover due to the theme of the box being national costume. The sides of the box continue this theme with the two longer sides festooned with costume clad folk including a poncho wearing Mexican and a porcelain faced Chinese women; all great fun.
In around 1759 Joseph Fry started making chocolate and the rest, as they say, is history. The business soon moved through several names and hands before ending up as J. S. Fry & Sons. The bars featuring on the lid of this selection box are some of the all time favorites including Fry's Turkish Delight (1914), Crunchie (1929) to the most recent to feature on the lid - Picnic (1958). The box is marked ‘Made by J.S.Fry and Sons Ltd, Somerdale, Bristol, England’; we know that Fry’s operated from Somerdale between 1923–1981.
This is a wonderfully nostalgic piece of vintage confectionary ware and one that can act equally well as a decorative delight or as part of a growing collection.
