The very well drawn English country house wing armchair of generous proportions, dating to the late Victorian period, the tall upholstered back rising to a gently arched and shaped crest, flanked by pronounced wings to a continuous sweeping line to broad arms, the deep seat retaining a substantial loose feather-filled cushion, the whole presently upholstered in natural calico and raised upon four dark-stained square tapering legs terminating in original castors.

The chair is in good, sound and usable condition and has recently been sympathetically re-upholstered in calico, making it suitable for immediate use or ready to receive a final decorative covering if desired. It has been traditionally re-upholstered following conservation of the substantial original timber frame. The loose seat cushion has the wonderfully relaxed appearance associated with traditional feather filling. The legs retain an attractive degree of age and surface wear and the castors appear consistent with the period of the chair. Minor marks and irregularities to the calico are commensurate with its workshop finish and intended purpose. 

The wing chair has its origins in the late seventeenth century, its enveloping sides originally intended to shield the sitter from draughts whilst retaining the warmth of an open fire. By the later Victorian and Edwardian periods the type had developed into increasingly comfortable upholstered forms intended for libraries, drawing rooms and bedrooms. This example is particularly successful; rather than the heavy, compact proportions encountered on many Victorian chairs, its high back, long descending wings and beautifully controlled serpentine side profile give it an unusually elegant and architectural appearance.

A wonderfully inviting English armchair with all the characteristics sought in traditional country-house upholstery; generous scale, comfort and an exceptionally good silhouette. Equally effective left undecorated or upholstered in an antique textile, faded velvet or patterned linen.
