Used to promote traveling, shopping and posting early for Christmas, the poster, issued by the General Post Office, and designed by the artist Hans Unger in typical luminescent style, features a pillar-box, postbox, in the form of a candle and an angel, showing the artists name top left, ‘J&Co 51-3253’ bottom left and the GPO logo bottom right.

Condition is fair to good; there is some light creasing where the poster has been folded prior to being framed, the vibrant colours still very evident.

From the 1930s the Post Office harnessed Britain's leading artists and designers for its poster campaigns, a move started by its first public relations officer Stephen Tallents. Hans Unger, born in Germany in 1915, was one of these.

Unger designed posters for London Transport from 1950 right up until before his death in 1975 and first studied poster design in the studio of Jupp Wiertz in Berlin (1934-1935) before emigrating to South Africa to work as a freelance commercial designer in Cape Town. He moved to London in 1948, where he became a prolific poster designer and through collaborating with the mosaicist Eberhard Schulze, Unger also became acknowledged as one of the best mosaic designers in London.

This is a large version of this sought after design and with thousands of reproductions produced it is refreshing to see a large original mid century piece of information artwork.
