A Silver Mounted 19thC Walking Stick, The Terminal Carved as a Bulldog's Head

A straight hardwood walking stick, with a white metal (presumed silver) mount engraved 'H. SAVOLA, J. REMO, II REMIO', (which we presume to be previous ?Italian owner's names), terminating in a finely carved head of a bulldog, with a realistic glass eye (one of the eyes is absent), and bone ears (one replaced with wood). There is a blue cord that runs through the stick, just behind the mount.
Animal carved walking sticks are immensely popular, with dog or bird's heads commonly featuring as the terminal. The present example is rather enigmatic, the engraved silver plaque suggesting a continental origin, whereas the bulldog head an English one.
We feel this intrigue certainly adds to the appeal, and the quality of the carving of the head, and the addition of the plaque suggest that this was once a highly prized object. Excellent to take out while walking the dog, and if you don't have a dog, you can take this walking stick out, and duly pretend!
