A Victorian Pierced Brass & Oak Wall Mounted Postal Box

SOLD

Origin: British
Period: Late Nineteenth Century
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1870
Width: 9.25 inches
Depth: 4.5 inches
Height: 5 inches

Marked ‘Post and Delivery’, the brass front plate is attractively pierced with quatrefoil motifs with five turned bands of oak under, sitting on a lower skirt base.

The structural condition is good with the oak showing no signs of infestation, though there is wear to the brass work plate.

This would have been a postal box for private use in a large Victorian house or establishment such as a surgery or other small business and is a charming throwback to when letters were an integral part of day-to-day life.

Oh, we’ve come over all ‘Larkrise to Candleford'…
