The generously sized hand forged iron bound sarcophagus shaped stained pine dome top trunk having wrought iron handles and reinforced corners, presented in its original and rather superb colour, showing an ornamental early lock plate and hasp, the double hinged interior opening to reveal a candle box and roomy vacant interior, the whole standing on later bun feet surviving from the last quarter of the eighteenth century.

In very desirable original condition, aside from the feet, which are nineteenth century associated, the original iron strap work remains, as do the hinges and original hasp. There is wear commensurate with age to the staining to pine and scuffs to the sides and loss of stain to the edges but we feel this gives it a very appealing patina and finish. There are no repairs or restoration to note. There is some small amount of old wood worm to the interior which we have treated as a precaution.

This is most likely an immigrant’s trunk, and so a crucial part of the inventory of the Swedish traveller when they were faced with the difficult choices immigrants made as they packed their trunks for the new world. What to take, what to leave behind?

In mouth-wateringly original condition this is the treasure trunk your hallway has always dreamed of...
