The wonderfully evocative Edwardian wall-mounted letter rack, constructed from sheet metal, retaining its original black painted finish and decorative gilt lettering, the whole of rectangular form, the open front divided into two compartments by a central partition, each enclosed by a series of slender vertical iron bars, the upper front rail bearing the inscription ‘Post… Delivery’ in gilt capital letters, separated by a delicate scrolling foliate ornament to a shaped backplate rising to a central crest with a circular aperture for wall mounting.

The piece displays a beautifully aged black painted surface with extensive historic wear, oxidation and areas of exposed metal throughout. The gilt lettering remains particularly well preserved and legible, contrasting attractively against the dark ground. There is general surface wear and patination consistent with age and use, with no obvious significant alterations visible.

Dating to the late Victorian or Edwardian period, this practical domestic accessory belongs to an age when the daily arrival and organisation of correspondence formed an important part of household life. Letter racks of this nature would have been positioned in entrance halls, offices or servants' areas, providing a convenient place for sorting incoming post. The combination of decorative gilt lettering and functional wirework is particularly characteristic of domestic and commercial accessories produced around the turn of the twentieth century.

A delightful survivor of everyday Edwardian life, combining genuine utility with considerable decorative charm. Its wonderfully weathered surface, elegant lettering and unusual barred construction make it an especially appealing piece of period domestic ephemera, equally attractive mounted upon a wall or displayed upon a desk.
