The George III period mahogany carcass of appealing small proportions with a solid overall colour, the caddy top over a typical bachelor type Georgian arrangement of four graduated and cockbeaded long drawers having the original peacock blue paper linings and retaining the original brass drop handles and original planked back, the whole sitting on shaped bracket feet, and surviving from the last quarter of the eighteenth century.
The condition proves very sound. The bracket feet and handles are all original though the drawers lack the original locks aside from the bottom drawer. We have waxed her to retain the current patina and finish, with some old spillage staining marks to the front drawers as photographed. The blue paper lining to the drawers is a nice bonus as it is the original paper.
Although the term ‘bachelors’ chest’ came to mean any small chest of drawers, originally the bachelor's chest was a multi-purpose piece of furniture, perfect for a single gentleman occupying a small bachelor's pad. English in original and small, shallow and relatively low they always have three to four drawers, usually graduated; with the first examples dating from the late 17th century whereby the top was hinged and could fold out to become a writing surface.
Of the most appealing proportions allowing it to slide into an apartment or city dwelling with ease.
