A superbly fashioned pine crate, stamped ‘Taplow’s Stratford, London’ to both sides, the corners well dovetailed, with iron strap-work to one side, the compartmentalised interior showing twelve individual sections for wine bottles.
General condition is as found, the wood is still solid, and the handles now nice and tactile; there is one section of loss to a top corner, as shown in the photographs.
Taplow & Co were wine and spirit merchants at Maryland Point in Stratford east London, and were bought out by Savill Brothers who started brewing at the Stratford Brewery in 1856. Registered as a limited company in December 1893 the Savill Brothers took over the original firm and also Taplow's wine and spirit business. They were then taken over by Charringtons of Mile End in 1925, when the brewery at Stratford ceased. Savill's business was liquidated 1932.
A handsome piece of functional rustic vintage ware, now near antique, and quite a rare find.
