The folk art crafted hinged box in the form of a book, retaining the original green and red painted surfaces, now beautifully timeworn, opening to reveal a vacant inner storage compartment, and surviving from George III period England.

The box is in good all-round condition, with no cracks or damages, with the painted surface un-meddled with, and the edges rounded proving the piece to be very tactile. The hinges are probably later replacements. There is the former owners name inscribed in pencil to the interior in lovely script but it is hard to decipher.

It is not clear when the first book box was originally made but this is the earliest one we have come across.

A unique piece of folk art and one that would make a lovely gift for those secret mementoes.
