A Good c.1800 Carved Ivory Corpus Christi

The finely carved ivory Corpus Christi attached to an ebonised softwood carved wooden cross beneath an inscribed INRI panel, standing on an unusually shaped scroll carved base survives from the late Georgian period.
This decorative corpus is in fair overall condition. There are some small splits and cracks, with losses to one hand in particular, and there is some minor old woodworm to the crucifix. The ivory displays are very rich and well established patina and the whole certainly is evocative of its vintage.
This carvings detail is of superior quality, the way the ribs are showing and the expression on Jesus’ face are both deft and highly skilled.
Cross symbols predate Christianity, and ancient objects bearing crosses have been found in most parts of the world and the cross is the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith. It represents the death and resurrection of Jesus and serves as a reminder of our own sins and our need for redemption. The acronym INRI (Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum) that we see above the figure represents the Latin inscription which in English reads as "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews".
A good quality early example of a religious objet d’art with a folksy-primitive lilt.
