Issued by London Transport to promote the use of public transport in the capital, and designed by the artist DM Earnshaw in typical quaint style, featuring a highly stylised figure of a young boy gaily strutting amongst a botanical backdrop on a buff coloured ground, reading ‘Free booklet all about party outings by underground, bus or coach from London Transport 55 Broadway. SW1’ with the London Transport Logo and artist signature under, printed by the Dangerfield printing Company, London.
Condition is sound; there is some light creasing and crinkling where the poster has been folded prior to being framed, and the two lower corners are more light saturated but there are no tears or holes. The poster is presented in a large simple frame and glazed ready to hang.
The campaign this poster was advertising for in 1938 would have been supported by a twenty page booklet, also illustrated by Earnshaw, which would have contained an underground map, and details of pleasure trips by underground, tram, trolleybus, omnibus and coach.
An immediately likeable piece of artwork, prints are available through the London Transport Museum, but an original is scarce and is now safely preserved surely prompting admiring glances for years to come.
