Date: c.1925-30
Height: 9.5 inches

The original early 20th century Art Deco period shop display hand of carved wood and gesso with a gilt painted finish, mounted on a well turned and weighted wooden base and bearing the Birmingham based mannequin maker’s label for Harris & Sheldon.

The hand has some expected chipping to the finger ends so as the gilt paint and some of the gesso is lacking in small areas. The model screws into the weighted base and so can move quite freely when screwed into position, the thread is worn. There are no signs of major structural damage or restoration of any sort. The base bears around 70% of its original label.

Harris & Sheldon of 70 Wood Street, London, E.C.2, and Stafford Street, Birmingham were shop fitters and were established in Birmingham for around one hundred and thirty years from circa 1870. They did not just provide a local service but extended over the country and this fitting would have been made to order for one of the top window displays of its day.

Proving very difficult to find this is wonderfully redolent of the art deco period, and hugely decorative in its own right.
