Turkomen rugs are handmade mostly in north-western and eastern Iran, but can sometimes found to be from parts of Turkey, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Syria, and other parts of the Caucasus. The beauty of these weavings is primarily why many are attracted to Turkomen pieces. The history, beliefs and way of life of the Turkmen people are all of great importance to their art. Turkmen rugs, therefore, with their distinctive palettes, motifs and compositions, are not merely examples of a strange and exotic folk art but represent a highly complex and historical culture.

The condition is fair, on the one side, there are seven areas of "thinning" and uneven wear.  The longest of these places of thinning is over 7"; two others are 3" in length. The rug is stable though and not in any need of repair if one likes ones rugs to have character.

This piece has a geometrical feel; the field filled with hook lozenges, known as the tarantula pattern, on a rust ground all beset within a diagonal border.  This piece is beautifully worn in and has an aura of it's own with the creams and indigos leaping out, giving the piece a rather hypnotic nuance. This rug has come directly from Ashford Hall, which is situated, in arguably the most picturesque village in Derbyshire, Ashford-in-the-Water. Ashford Hall is an elegant Palladian mansion and the former home of Lord George Cavendish.
