A Fabulous c.1890 Centre Light in the Form of Four Putti

SOLD

Origin: English
Period: Victorian
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1890-1900
Diameter: 17 inches (at maximum)
Height: 19 inches (with chains and fitments)
Chain Length: 14 inches

The Victorian period centre light modelled cast as four winged putti clutching victory laurels, having a circular metal frame with the original hanging chain fixtures surviving from late nineteenth century England.

The light fitting is in good condition. The only issue to note is that two of the four cherubs’ garland wreaths that they are holding have losses. The whole does not suffer from losses, cracks or restoration with a good aged patination to the surface with the finish worn more heavily in some places than others. The light has had its aged and unsafe wiring replaced and has been PAT tested and is now up to modern standards and is supplied with a ceiling rose and 3-pin plug. Small shades could be added to each fitting if so desired.

This type of fitting featuring cherubs was also popular in the 1920s though featured only one cherub, typically. Its high Victorian style is reminiscent of fittings found on White Star Line ships such as RMS Titanic.

A wonderfully dramatic and enduringly romantic lighting fixture.
