The high quality nineteenth century three piece Corpus Christi, intricately carved in ivory, mounted on an ebonised cross with a bone Christian cross below, the whole on an aubergine maroon coloured velvet ground and framed within a Gothic lancet shaped ebonised ripple moulded niche pine frame.

The corpus is in very good overall condition, the ivory is very well carved and now proves tactile and does not suffer from chips or losses. The red velvet ground is thinning in some small areas and the bone crucifix is loose on its axis whilst the ebonised pine is in good order and the piece retains its old hanging hook for display.

Cross symbols predate Christianity, and ancient objects bearing crosses have been found in most parts of the world and the cross is the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith. It represents the death and resurrection of Jesus and serves as a reminder of our own sins and our need for redemption.

Soli Deo Gloria.
