A Good 19thC Sycamore Carved Bread Board with Motto 'Waste Not' & Associated Glass Dome Cover

SOLD

Origin: English
Period: Late Nineteenth Century
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1870 (the Board)
Diameter: 11.75 inches or 8.5 inches for the Cover
Height: 8 inches (the whole)

The antique bread board with gothic relief carved motto ‘Waste Not’ and acorns amongst leafs below, alluding to the age old adage ‘Waste not Want Not’, together with a later good quality early twentieth century glass dome cover terminating in an attractive spherical knop.

The well patinated sycamore board has no signs of loss or infestation and the glass is neither chipper nor cracked whilst the carvings to the edges are worn, making the board tactile. The design of the carving is similar to that of Majolica makers such as Pugin and George Jones for Minton.

A versatile combination that carries wholesome farmhouse appeal to today’s contemporary kitchen.
