A Very Large Victorian Steel Padlock & Key c.1870

SOLD
Origin: English
Period: Mid Victorian
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1870
Height: 5”
Width: 3.5”
Depth: 1.5”

Having an iron case and shackle with brass escutcheon and cover, stamped ‘VR improved secure patent lock’, accompanied by the original key and surviving from having been used in a large estate such as a graveyard or school.

The condition is very good with the lock in good working order and nothing to report in the way of damage.

The VR on this padlock stands for Victoria Regina or Queen Victoria. The firm of Abraham Thompson of Willenhall, for example, manufactured padlocks with the letters VR under a crown.

A scarce collectable and one that has magnetism to it.
