An Eye-catching Art Deco Celluloid Geisha Pill Box

SOLD

Origin: English

Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1925-30
Height: 1.5 inches
Diameter: 1.75 inches

The delicately proportioned celluloid, fashioned in dramatic ebony black with screw top lid, depicting a Japanese Geisha in Art Deco style, opening to reveal an ivory coloured interior. The contrasting ebony and ivory is wonderfully appealing and the stylised geisha girl is beautifully realised, the ruby red of the kimono giving her real lift with the drawing sharp, the whole intensely art deco.

In fine condition, there are no cracks or chips and the colours remain simply superb.

The term Art Deco encompasses the distinctive styles in art, architecture and design, and is typified by bright bold colours, and stylized designs derived from the onset of industrialism, as well as artistic movements such as modernism, cubism, and futurism. It is one of the best loved, most influential, instantly recognisable, international, and elegant of all artistic periods.

An extremely attractive box, in a scarce form, that screams art deco from the rooftops, and we like what we hear.
